More and more Portuguese expats choose to return to Portugal before retirement age, often while continuing their professional activity or launching a new one.
Context
Several support measures are available through the “Regressar” program.
Eligibility conditions for the program

Carry out a professional activity in Portugal, either through:
- – a permanent employment contract of more than 12 months,
- – self-employment or the creation of a company,
- – a research grant of at least 12 months;
- • Hold Portuguese nationality;
- • Have been outside Portugal for at least five years;
- • Be compliant with Portuguese tax obligations;
- • Maintain an up-to-date administrative status.
Potential advantages
Participants may benefit from direct financial incentives or a tax regime (depending on eligibility and program conditions).
